Project Type
Nursery, Seed Bank
Location
HOST Park, Hawaiʻi Island

Terraformation Hawaiʻi is restoring forests across Hawaiʻi at a landscape scale, from seed to forest, in partnership with local communities and organizations. Located in Kailua-Kona on Hawai‘i Island (the Big Island of Hawai‘i) at HOST Park, this hub embodies the Native Hawaiian understanding that the health of the ocean (makai) is inseparable from the health of the mountains (mauka). From our climate-controlled seed bank where processed over 9.9M seeds over the past 4 years to our dry-forest nursery, we are helping to preserve the genetic diversity of the islands for a more resilient future. In partnership with Arizona State University, 3RC also houses a state-of-the-art coral nursery, tying ocean health to land restoration in a true ridge-to-reef approach.
The Ridge to Reef Restoration Center is the central hub for Terraformation’s Hawaiʻi Island operations. Beyond operations, it serves as a gathering place for the community and a place of learning and knowledge exchange. Demonstration and learning site for preserving Native ecological wisdom, forestry innovation, data management, and community education.

Our nurseries support the full lifecycle of forest restoration, agroforestry, and native ecosystem management, propagating everything from native forest species to traditional canoe crop trees. Every plant is tracked by Terraware across our nursery sites, currently operating in coastal dry land and wet forest climate zones.
Focuses on coastal, low-elevation, and dry forest species
Approx. 10,000 plants
Grow media soil composition, seed germination, and other propagation techniques
All operations tracked through Terraware, remote monitoring
We collect and bank native seed to preserve genetic diversity and ensure a reliable supply of high-quality seed for restoration, agroforestry, and conservation efforts. We have deployed seed banks across five Hawaiian islands.
Approx. 50M seeds
Following Hawaii Seed banking Partnership Protocols
Processing and desiccation of seeds on site and long term storage
Using Terraware app to database every seed as well as collection location
In off grid operation for 4+ years.
Fully remote monitoring capabilities to track humidity, temperature and power supply
Provided countless tours of facility to other organizations to share lessons learned.
3RC is available to rent for community events, workshops, and gatherings. Contact our team via the form below, and we will be in touch!
