Ahupua’a
Kuahiwi a kai Program Area
Project Type
Seed Banking
Location
Lānaʻi

Before restoration can scale on Lānaʻi, the island needs a reliable native seed supply. Funded by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, this project supports Pūlama Lānaʻi's Kuahiwi a Kai program to restore 20,000 acres ridge to reef, building seed collection and banking capacity. Terraformation delivered a containerized seedbank that to date, helped the team collect: 3,359,096 seeds from 54 native species, establish 289 active seed accessions, and place 242 accessions in storage, building the seed supply and knowledge database to guide continued restoration.

The program builds in stages: standing up the seed bank, training local partners to carry the work forward, and sustaining collection across the island's priority habitat for generations to come.
3.3 million seeds collected across 54 native species, laying the foundation for future restoration.
Keeping native seed secure on island, the Lānaʻi seed bank manages 289 active accessions, 242 in storage.
With 1,360 phenology points recorded, field teams can predict flowering, fruiting, and seed collection windows.
Native seed supply rapidly growing across 54 native species, with 289 active accessions and 242 accessions in storage.
Seed bank delivery created local capacity to process, desiccate, store, and monitor native seed on Lānaʻi.
Recurring collection trips, phenology monitoring, seed processing, and accession tracking are now connected from field observation through storage.
Terraware is being used to track accessions, species, and collection status, helping organize seed bank data and guide future collections.
Training with Pūlama Lānaʻi is underway in seed collection, seed banking protocols, data workflows, and seed bank operations to help carry the work forward.
Hundreds of community members engaged through Kupulau Festival participation, increasing local awareness of and connection to the project.
Our team will reach out to you to answer any questions you may have about starting a partnership with Terraformation.
