Medellín, Colombia, April 2026 — Sembrando Futuro 2.0, a native forest restoration project in Colombia that is being co-developed by Terraformation and Fundación Grupo Argos (FGA), has received an ‘A’ rating by Sylvera, an independent carbon data provider. The rating reflects strong confidence in the project’s ability to deliver real, measurable carbon and climate impact, while also highlighting the complementary strengths that underpin the initiative: Terraformation’s carbon and restoration expertise, and FGA’s on-the-ground leadership and long-standing experience in Colombia.
The ARR Sembrando Futuro 2.0 project aims to restore more than 2,000 hectares of degraded land across the Central and Western Andes in Antioquia, Caldas, Risaralda, Córdoba, and Chocó. The first implementation phase spans over 1,000 hectares, where planting has been underway since September 2023. Using over 70 locally adapted native tree species — including nine IUCN-listed threatened species — the project is rebuilding biodiverse forests across six High Conservation Value areas.
The project is listed on Verra’s registry (VCS 5169) and is the first native-species-only restoration initiative in Colombia certified under Verra’s VM0047 V1.1 methodology. It contributes to five UN Sustainable Development Goals: Climate Action (13), Life on Land (15), Gender Equality (5), No Poverty (1), and Decent Work & Economic Growth (8).
At its core is a landowner-centered model. Smallholders, community groups, and private landowners formalize participation through renewable 40-year Conservation Agreements. To date, 25 agreements have been signed with local landowners. Participants receive around 55% of carbon revenue, creating a direct incentive for long-term stewardship, while also enabling broader environmental and social co-benefits, including biodiversity recovery, watershed protection, and new income opportunities in rural communities.
The project has already generated more than 240 local jobs, with a minimum target of 15% employment for women, and there are plans to expand. Local owners of degraded, unused or underutilized land are invited to participate in long-term conservation agreements that generate income through carbon revenue while restoring ecosystems.
“We found that forest restoration would give new life to land that had been worked for so long. In just one year, we’re already seeing trees grow and wildlife return. The most important thing is what we’re leaving for future generations.”
— Juan David Osorio, landowner, Antioquia
Fundación Grupo Argos leads local implementation, drawing on more than a decade of restoration experience across Colombia, community relationships, and territorial knowledge. Terraformation supports the project through carbon and restoration expertise, its monitoring platform Terraware, and access to carbon markets. Together, the partnership delivers a model designed for both ecological integrity and scalability.
Sylvera’s ‘A’ rating reflects assessment across carbon accounting, additionality, and permanence.
The project’s carbon accounting was rated Very Low Risk. This is supported by dynamic baselining, robust leakage mitigation, and monitoring aligned with VM0047 V1.1 best practices.
Additionality, defined as whether a project creates climate and ecological benefits that would not have happened without the project’s intervention, was assessed as Low Risk, reflecting the absence of regulatory or financial incentives capable of supporting long-term native forest restoration at this scale. The shift from cattle ranching to forest restoration is enabled by carbon finance.
Permanence, assessing whether the forest will last for generations, was rated Moderate Risk, consistent with regional environmental conditions. Risks are mitigated through species diversity, geographic dispersion, adaptive management, and regular maintenance during early growth stages. Flood risk was assessed as low following spatial analysis.
Sylvera also rated the project’s co-benefits as Exceptional, citing strong environmental safeguards, employment generation, and equitable revenue sharing.
“Only a small number of biodiverse forest restoration projects reach the carbon market each year. Sembrando Futuro 2.0 is one. Sylvera's 'A' rating confirms it's among the best.”
— Yishan Wong, Founder and CEO, Terraformation
