Overview

The Bukidnon-Tagoloanon Tribe is restoring 1,000 hectares of tropical forests on degraded ancestral land. Planting native species will enhance biodiversity, curb erosion, and reduce risk of wildfire.

Co-benefits include improved food security through agroforestry programs and sustainable job opportunities.

Project Goals

Revive ancestral domain forests
Remove ~600,000 tonnes CO₂
Increase food and water security
Reduce wildfire and landslide risks
Restore biodiversity

Environmental Impact

Deforestation has turned tropical broadleaf forest into hills dominated by grass. Restoring the native ecosystem will protect biodiversity, reduce erosion, and improve resilience to natural disasters, such as wildfire and landslides.

Restore Native Plant Species

Improve habitat for endangered turtles, primates, and 700+ species of birds, some of which are found nowhere else on Earth.

Carbon Removal

This project will remove 600,000+ tonnes of CO₂ over 40 years, with an opportunity to expand to 12,000 hectares and involve multiple Indigenous communities in northern Bukidnon.

Community Benefits

This project enhances food security and income for local farmers through agroforestry programs, including planting cocoa, abaca (hemp), and adlai (a type of millet). Sustainable livelihoods promote gender equality and women in leadership positions.

Local Implementation

Terraformation is working with CCCO2, a Philippine reforestation and conservation company, to restore 1,000 hectares of tropical native forests on degraded ancestral land.

Restore Ancestral Lands

CCCO2 incorporates Indigenous knowledge of local biodiversity and is guided by a deep connection to this ancestral land. The National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) recognizes this land as the private communal property of the Bukidnon-Tagoloanon Tribe.

Food Security and Income

By integrating trees with crops like abaca (hemp), cocoa, and Coix lacryma-jobi (adlai, a type of millet), this agroforestry strategy benefits the environment and improves the livelihoods of local farmers.
