Kailua-Kona, Hawaiʻi (February 12, 2025)Terraformation celebrates its fifth company anniversary by achieving a milestone of nearly 2.4 million trees planted through its native tree restoration programs. Dedicated to addressing climate change, Terraformation restores the planet’s forests to capture carbon, revitalize nature, and support thriving communities. Terraformation’s partnerships with global organizations, local governments, and indigenous communities scale the restoration of native biodiverse forests by equipping forestry teams with training, technology, and access to capital.

A Record Year for Climate Action

Trees are one of the best solutions for absorbing carbon dioxide to mitigate the effects of climate change. 2024 was a milestone year for Terraformation, building essential momentum for its mission of restoring native biodiverse forests to combat climate change. One million mangroves were planted in 2024, reaching a total of nearly 2.4 million plants.

Forests offer one of the safest and fastest ways to remove carbon from the atmosphere, but seeds from native species are needed to reforest the planet at scale. Nine million seeds were stored across five Terraformation-built seed banks last year in Hawai‘i, contributing to 136 million seeds banked by Terraformation or its partners since the inception of the seed banking program.

Scaling Global Forestry Teams

Restoring forests with native species has the potential to store over 30% of the world’s excess carbon, but current reforestation efforts are constrained by limited forestry capacity. Terraformation’s Seed to Carbon Forest Accelerator addresses this gap, supporting forestry teams in Africa, Latin America, and Southeast Asia with training, technology, and capital to create high-quality carbon projects.

The Accelerator brings quality carbon credits to the market by creating high-integrity forestry projects that the voluntary carbon market demands. In 2024, Grosvenor Property UK provided crucial funding to develop the Regenerative Development of Anlo Wetlands (ReDAW) mangrove restoration project in Keta Lagoon, Ghana, which will sequester an estimated one million tonnes of greenhouse gases by 2064. Restoring up to 2,300 hectares of mangroves will bring significant community benefits, including the revival of local fisheries, improved water and food security, and sustainable full-time and part-time jobs for hundreds of local people, with over 50% held by women.

In 2024, the Accelerator program drew interest from 88 forestry teams. Since its inception, the program has received over 800 applications across 87 countries, representing over 16 million hectares of reforestable land. Nearly 19 teams have completed the first phase of training which examines project feasibility and financial viability, and nine of these projects have advanced to phase two, which involves design and registration of a certified carbon project. These projects collectively represent over 25,000 hectares of restoration potential.

"Reforestation isn't optional—it's a necessity. Climate change is our reality, demanding immediate action,” said Terraformation CEO Yishan Wong. “Terraformation was founded five years ago to face this head-on, with one mission in mind: restoring the planet’s native forests to fight against the environmental devastation we’ve caused. Our milestones and partnerships with local communities to restore biodiverse ecosystems need to accelerate at a pace where change is felt, and that’s where the private sector can fill the gap.”

Nature Tech and Tools

Built by foresters for foresters, Terraformation's free, open-source software, Terraware, plays an instrumental role in enabling forestry teams to manage every stage of restoration projects, from site planning to carbon tracking. With over 500 registered organizations and active users across 70 countries, Terraware bridges the gap between ground data and remote monitoring, ensuring transparency and efficiency in measuring forest health and progress.

Demonstrating the growing awareness of its expertise in native forest restoration as a priority among corporations and impact investors, Terraformation has recently garnered accolades, including being named by Environmental Finance as the Nature-based Initiative of the Year, Americas and awarded the IFF Global Green Finance Innovation Award from the International Finance Forum.

Local Impact in Hawai‘i

In addition to its global business, Terraformation remains deeply engaged in restoring native ecosystems in Hawai‘i. Terraformation Hawai‘i, the company’s Internal Forestry Operations team, both manages local restoration projects and refines techniques to scale native forest recovery worldwide. In 2024, the team expanded its restoration footprint with 11 projects restoring native forests and advancing agroforestry solutions for biodiversity and ecosystem resilience. It also secured significant new projects in ecosystem restoration and sustainable land management, reinforcing its leadership in Hawai‘i's reforestation efforts. With three restoration sites, two nurseries, and a dedicated seed bank on the Big Island, the team has planted 39,733 trees since inception and continues developing technologies and strategies for large-scale restoration success.
